In an effort to constantly improve its production techniques, LHF maintains a firm grasp on leading edge technology.  The farm has been using global positioning systems (GPS) since 1995.  Primarily, it’s [GPS] been used with a yield monitor at harvest.  “We’ve also used it to track planting, spraying, and tiling installation and repair,” says Blake.  LHF also uses GPS to track pest problems and certain management information such as hybrid and chemical placement.  Once this information is collected, it’s archived and analyzed with the farm’s ArcView Geographic Information System (GIS).  This program provides the capability of doing complex statistical analysis on a geographical basis.

Besides implementing the latest tools in precision farming, LHF is on the forefront with biotechnology.  In 2002, LHF experimented with high oleic soybeans, a genetically enhanced soybean designed to produce a more healthful soybean oil. "This year will be our eighth year using Bt corn and our seventh year using Roundup Ready soybeans.  We’ve learned quite a bit about how to use these tools effectively, being careful to use them where and when they're appropriate, and always managing for things like insect refuge,” explains Blake.  “Used responsibly, biotechnology can bring substantial positive change for producers, industry, and consumers."
